Magnetic Science

What a great way to start the term! The bell went at 9:00 and we went straight to science with Sterling. We found out about magnets. Did you know that if you line a nail up with (Mrs Howard thinks North East) and hit it with a hammer the nail turns magnetic!!! How cool is that? We played with two magnets and found that a magnet has a positive and a negative end. Check out our videos and pictures of our discoveries.

Science Fair

Wow! What a fantastic Science Fair!! Each of us made an investigation on a topic we choose.  We each had to buddy up with a friend or do one by ourselves. We then had to think of a question to investigate  make a hypothesis.  After we did that we printed out pictures and pages and pages of research. The best part was carrying out the experiment and testing our hypothesis.  We put all our information together and glued it onto our board for display. Made a title and then waited for the judges to decide! By then everyone was getting excited about the results! Finally the time came! We all came to the hall where everyones science fair was on display. There came Sterling and Ms Cooke, the judges. Sterling came around to Jake's Science fair board , he wrote something! Yes, Jake came 2nd overall and he was also a finalist. Lisa and Jade came 1st out of the class , Lysia came 2nd out of the class and Sam and Drew came 3rd. Well done Room 10 we did an awesome job!

Miss Arps

In Room 10 we have had a student teacher. Miss Arps was in our class for 5 weeks and taught us for 3 of them. She was in our class to experience teaching a class and wow it was great! We did drama, art and games and even a family day. At the family day we chose a relative to come in for a shared lunch. We played team games and shared the work that we had been doing on families. The activites were a three legged race with a partner and the another one was an egg and spoon race in teams. Miss Arps helped us with our speeches and science fair. Thanks Miss Arps for a great few weeks we hope you enjoyed teaching our class.

Science week 5

This week at science, we learnt about light and how it affects bubbles. We did lots of experiments like blowing bubbles onto a flat surface to see if it would stay without popping and blowing bubbles into the air, and bouncing it on a glove without it popping. Room 10 saw that light is made up of all the colours of the rainbow which we could se in the bubbles we blew. The colours in a bubble move down as the bubble gets 'older'.We also learned that if you put a cube into a bubble mixture it would blow a square bubble. Kahu and Sam

Luscious Lunches

Luscious Lunches

This term for inquiry Room 10 have have come up with and presented some healthy ideas for the CTS hot lunch menu, such as jelly with fruit, burritos, banana berry smoothies etc. But before we presented them we took some time to think up some questions to ask Mc Donald's, Mr Schneider, a food nutritionist called Rebecca and Di Fry. A few weeks later we made instructions on how to make our items, then we got the ingredients and then we made and presented them to the judges from each class who voted on the taste, smell, look and how many healthy ingredients were added. When the results came in, the winners were...... Burritos & the Very Berry Frozen Yoghurts!!!
Until the end of this term chicken wraps will be presented on the hot lunch menu, then next term there will be banana berry smoothies.

Go Blue Day

GO BLUE DAY - HEART CHILDREN

On Friday the 29th May 2009 all the kids at clifton terrace school had a mufti day to support the heard foundation, and there was a gold coin donation and we raised over $100! Well done children they will be very pleased! If you would like to take a look at some facts look below:
Every week 12 babies are born with a heart defect. More than half of these will require surgery. Sadly, some can not be fixed. 70% of all heart surgery involves stopping the child's heart. 1000 children a year are treated for this in Auckland hospital! Childhood heart disease kills more children than all of the other childhood diseases put together. Your donation is going towards support and care of these children. Thank you for your support. There were lots of different sorts of costumes from feathers and scarfs to funny sun glasses and face paint!

Science Week 1

On Friday 7th May we went to a science programme in the art room. The first thing we did was put on some protective goggles. Each group had some containers in front of them and then got some solid carbon dioxide, which looked just like ice. Next we added some warm water and massive puffs of steam poured out. After, we did the experiment again but this time we added food colouring and then a drop of dish washing liquid. Out came huge tubes of bubble that didn't stop.

We found out a really big word SUBLIMATION which means when a solid changes into a gas(steam) without changing to liquid first. We saw SUBLIMATION happen with the water mixed with the carbon dioxide.
We also found out that everything in the world is either a SOLID, LIQUID or GAS.
